The maxillary sinus must pump mucous uphill to reach the sinus opening which is at the top. This sinus has a large internal surface area and volume relative to the size of its outflow tract. The flow exits the sinus ostia, then traverses the uncinate process, then drains over the top of the inferior turbinate.
